Cafelat Robot

We recently got a Cafelat Robot, which has taken our coffee to a new level.

Pre-heating the metal basket and basket holder immediately before making the coffee improves the flavour.

Krups Model 871 and Model 963

Our previous machines were Krups Model 871 and Model 963. These are under-rated machines, and are very good value for money at around £30 on Ebay.

But you have to use the machines correctly, and the printed instructions for them are useless.

1. You must use just the correct amount of water; that's 60-70 ml of water for a double shot. Then allow all the coffee liquid to flow into the cup. You can use slightly more water, but then you must pull the cup away after 30-40 ml, and subtitute another container while the machine empties.

2. Use 16-18 gm of coffee, ground for esspresso machines.

3. You must tamp, although some instructions say not to.

This will give a reasonably good esspresso; although not as good as professional machines or a Cafelat Robot.

Unfortunately, you cannot easily make a cappucino using the Krups to froth the milk, because all the water in the machine goes through the coffee. We had two machines, and when I wanted a cappucino (not very often), I would make the esspresso in one machine, and froth the milk using the other machine.
